Rock music is not something that is limited only to the west. In India also, there are a number of rock bands that have attained heights of popularity amongst the masses. In fact, many of these rock bands have received international recognition, apart from entering into the mainstream Indian music. The band Avial is the story of four talented youths who used their delectable taste for Malayalam rock to build powerful music. The result – a band focusing on Alternative Malayalam Rock.

Every Malayalee can now boast of Avial’s music because its comparable with the very best in the Indian Rock scene! It doesn’t matter that they sing only in Malayalam – any Rock fan can easily identify with their music. The group was formed in 2003 with the sole purpose of creating Malayalam-themed music. Their first song ‘Nada, Nada…’ was a big hit with critics and fans alike. The vocalist for that song Anandraj Benjamin Paul has now left the band for greener pastures.



Indian Ocean (Delhi)

They are considered to be the pioneers of fusion rock genre in India. Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty, Rahul Ram and Amit Kilam were the member’s of the band till Asheem’s death on the 25th of December, 2009. No member has been officially inducted into the band as a replacement. Sushmit and Rahul are the only members who have appeared on the band’s debut album Indian Ocean.

The musical style of the band can be at best classified as fusion music. Some music critics describe the band’s music as “Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms that integrates shlokas, sufism, environmentalism, mythology and revolution”.



Parikrama (Delhi)


With a number of live performances and original numbers to its credit, Parikrama continues to be one of the most popular rock bands from Delhi. The band came into existence on June 17, 1991. The highlight of the band is its use of classical music instruments, like mridangam, tabla and flute, together with conventional instruments used for western music, including guitar, drums and keyboards.






Cactus (Kolkata)

 cactusCactus is an Indian Bangla rock band from Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Since inception they have recorded four full length studio albums and have performed over 2500 concerts across India. Cactus was formed in 1992. Inspired by the likes of Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and many others, they started the journey with the purpose of doing rock n’ roll in a language closer to their soil. The professional debut of the band saw the light of the day on March 6, 1993, at Aban Mahal (CLT), Kolkata. Since their formation their songs have appeared in many radio stations and their music videos, live concerts have appeared in many TV channels.
