Fake Anti-Virus Apps Found In App Stores

Fake apps claiming to offer virus protections for mobiles when in reality they offer none have been found in app stores.

Apps claiming to operate under the Kaspersky anti-virus name were found in both the Windows Phone Store and on Google Play.

On both occasions users were required to pay to download the apps, which went under the names Kaspersky Mobile and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014, both of which have since been removed.

The former app claimed to act as a scanner to pick up viruses on the users’ phone, while the latter used screenshots from the official Kaspersky Android app’s page to fool users into downloading it.

Senior Malware Analyst at Kaspersky Lab, said: “The story of paid fake AV for mobiles started with the appearance of Virus Shield in the Google Play store. Now we are seeing how one successful scam spawns numerous clones. Scammers who want to make a quick buck from inattentive users are selling dozens of fake apps, copying the design, but not the functionality of the original.

“It is quite possible that more and more of these fake apps will start appearing. However, one thing for sure is that the security mechanisms put in place by the official stores cannot cope with these kinds of scams.”

Facebook Wants You To “Ask”, ‘Hi, Are You Single?

Is your relationship status so “it’s complicated” that you haven’t even said so on Facebook? Well, now your nosey friends and frenemies can press you to tell all and demand to know why you’re being so secretive in a new “ask” button.

The button is a new feature the social media site has been quietly rolling out over the past few months but it appears to have arrived on some profiles over the weekend.

The “ask” button appears next to categories of a user’s “about” section that have been left blank. This includes information such as where a user lives, place of employment and, yes, relationship status.

A user cannot see the button on his or her own profile.

ASK-BUTTON-570

When a user finds a blank spot on a friend’s page, they can click on “ask” and a little window pops up that allows them to explain why they’re asking for that information. Once you hit “send request” only the user who’s subject to your prying can see the question. They can choose to ignore you, make that information either public or known only to you, or reply with an old-fashioned “none of your beeswax.”

Google Buys Language Translation Camera App Word Lens

Google has acquired Word Lens, the mobile app that can translate text in real time using your smartphone’s camera, along with its development team at Quest Visual. The impressive technology will now make its way into Google Translate. Word Lens and its various language packs have been made free on both iOS and Android “as a thank you” to supporters, but don’t expect to see much in the way of updates moving forward. Quest Visual makes it very clear that the plan is to transition to Google as quickly as possible.

Quest Visual updated the Word Lens Web page to confirm the acquisition.

“Quest Visual is joining Google! With Word Lens, we’ve seen the beginnings of what’s possible when we harness the power of mobile devices to ‘see the world in your language.’ By joining Google, we can incorporate Quest Visual’s technology into Google Translate’s broad language coverage and translation capabilities in the future,” the company said.

Description

Instantly translate printed words with your phone’s camera!

Word Lens gives you translation on the go:
– NO NETWORK required – results appear immediately on your video screen when you need it, anywhere in the world.
– Easy to use, like the regular camera
– Look up translations by typing them in, or clicking on a word.

Available language pairs:

+ English ⇆ Russian
+ English ⇆ Spanish
+ English ⇆ French
+ English ⇆ Italian
+ English ⇆ German
+ English ⇆ Portuguese

Notes for getting the best quality out of your translations:

– Best used on clearly printed text (e.g. signs, menus)
– DOES NOT recognize handwriting or stylized fonts
– It’s not perfect, but you can get the general meaning!
– Keep text in focus by holding it at least one hand-length away and tap-to-focus if autofocus is struggling.
– Turn on the flashlight (if available on your device)
– Zoom in (if available on your device)
